"The Devil Wears Prada"
7/17/2006

ROBIN'S PERSPECTIVE: I loved the book, “The Devil Wears Prada” – it evoked flashbacks of a Queen Bee –type boss for whom I once worked. You know, the kind who needs to be the only star in the sky, and who inflicts untold psychological and mental abuse upon her subordinates, just to make sure they don’t even think about lifting their heads up where they might get noticed.

A lot has been written about why these oppressors succeed – and it’s usually because they are perfectionists who turn out the highest level of work – and make sure everyone else around them does, too. Rarely do they seem to suffer consequences for their abuse, leaving people who wish to remain sane with few real options but to look for another job.

How do you cope with the Queen Bee while you’re looking for a new hive? Here are a few suggestions:

-Don’t talk to co-workers about how bad you think the situation is; rather, seek talk therapy and coping assistance from professionals, family members, and friends.

-Find some external way to get the validation of your worth that your boss is withholding. For example, attend professional association meetings or events, or publish or speak at seminars

–Find ways to get your name out in a way that can draw new job opportunities to you.

-Keep something inspirational on your desk or in your wallet or pocket that you can look to for a quick pick-me-up when things get bad. And remind yourself, that what which doesn’t kill you, will likely make you stronger.
