Happy Boss's Day - Here's How to Get Along Better with your Boss!
10/16/2013

ROBIN'S PERSPECTIVE: Today is "Bosses Day". Here are some tips on how to improve your relationship with your boss:

1. Find something about your boss that you can respect. Even if its just that you marvel how she can manipulate words, find something that enables you to tell yourself, Im going to learn a lot from this experience, and take it on with me to my next opportunity.

2. Flattery works, but fawning doesnt. Compliments are well received, and even if the recipient (the boss) thinks you may not be totally sincere, this strategy will resonate with the boss. Notice her new haircut, his attractive tie, or compliment a photo of the bosss cute child. Or keep the focus on work with a comment like, I really admire how you resolved that delicate issue in the meeting today with Logistics. I learned a lot.

3. Get a little personal. Find out where there are areas of common ground between you and your boss. Where did she grow up? Where did she go to school? What are her interests/hobbies? What art, photos, etc. does she have in her office? Then focus on rapport building. If she collects antique quilts, drop her a note about the upcoming antique quilt show; if you are going out to pick up lunch, ask if you can bring something back for her.

4. Find ways to make your boss look good. Document the good things you do, and how they bring revenue to the organization, or save it money. For example: By reducing safety violations by 5% this quarter, we kept an additional $15,000 in the bottom line. This documentation is very important to justifying your existence at evaluation time, too.

5. Mirror the boss in communications and behavior. Make sure you send the message that I hear you, Im listening to you, and Im processing what you want me to do. Communications failures are the #1 reason people get into my boss hates me situations.
